How to Grow Elephant Ears in Water: A Practical Guide to Soil-Free Cultivation

In the winter of 1998, I managed to rot an entire bench of rare slipper orchids in my home greenhouse.

I had convinced myself that keeping their roots constantly wet was the key to replicating their native Asian rainforests.

Instead, I ended up with a pile of black, smelly mush and a very expensive lesson in root respiration.

That early failure taught me that water levels and oxygen are a delicate, often unforgiving dance.

When people ask me if they can grow elephant ears in water, my short answer is a definite yes.

But the long answer requires us to understand which species we are talking about, because treating every variety the same will result in a familiar, rotting tragedy.

Let’s look at the botanical reality of this method, the physical mess involved, and how you can keep these large-leafed plants thriving without a single speck of soil.

Understanding the Genera: Colocasia vs. Alocasia

First, we need to sort out the botanical confusion around the common term “elephant ear.”

We generally use this name for two different genera: Colocasia and Alocasia.

If you want to succeed at growing elephant ears in water, you must choose Colocasia.

Colocasia species, often called taro, naturally grow in boggy, saturated soils and rice paddies throughout Southeast Asia.

According to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), Colocasia thrives in wet conditions and can even grow in pond margins during the warm summer months.

Alocasia, however, grows on forest floors with sharp drainage; submerge their roots in water permanently, and they will rot within weeks.

Make sure your plant tag reads Colocasia before you attempt to submerge it.

Choosing the Best Varieties for Water Cultivation

Not every Colocasia variety behaves the same way when grown without soil.

Some grow too large for indoor water vessels, while others adapt beautifully to life in a jar or vase.

I highly recommend Colocasia esculenta ‘Black Magic’ for water setups.

Its deep purple, almost black leaves look striking against clear glass and clean water.

Another excellent candidate is Colocasia esculenta ‘Illustris’, which features green leaves with dark violet highlights between the veins.

According to the Missouri Botanical Garden, these specific cultivars are routinely used in wet garden features and adapt easily to standing water.

Avoid using giant cultivars like ‘Jack’s Giant’ for indoor water setups; they simply get too heavy and will crash to the floor.

The Messy Process of Transitioning a Soil-Grown Plant

You can start this water-growing experiment with either an active potted plant or a dormant tuber.

Personally, I prefer starting with an active plant because you can immediately see how the root system behaves.

If you buy a potted Colocasia, prepare yourself for a messy, wet afternoon at the garden sink.

You will need to wash away every single speck of potting soil from the roots.

I spent three hours doing this last spring, with cold water splashing my face and dark mud wedged deep under my fingernails.

If you leave any organic soil on the roots, it will decay in the water and trigger a bacterial bloom that suffocates the plant.

To do this safely, submerge the entire root ball in a bucket of tepid water and let it sit for ten minutes.

Gently massage the roots underwater, letting the soil dissolve away naturally.

You will need to change the bucket water three or four times before the roots run clean.

It is tedious, wet work that will leave your hands cold, but skipping this step guarantees root rot within a week.

Starting from a Dormant Tuber

Starting from a bare tuber is cleaner but requires more patience.

Select a firm, plump tuber that shows no signs of soft spots or white mold.

You cannot simply drop this heavy bulb to the bottom of a deep bucket of water; it will drown.

The tuber needs oxygen, especially around the top where the new growth emerges.

Sit the tuber in a shallow tray of water, submerging only the bottom third of the bulb.

Keep this setup on a warm windowsill and wait for the tiny, white root nubs to push through the skin.

Once you see active root growth and a green shoot pointing upward, you can transition it to its permanent water home.

Choosing the Right Container and Support

Once your Colocasia has roots, you need a vessel that can support its top-heavy leaves.

These leaves grow large and act like sails, easily tipping over lightweight glass jars.

I prefer heavy ceramic crocks or deep glass cylinders anchored with clean river stones.

Wash these stones thoroughly with hot water before placing them in the container.

Place the roots gently among the stones, keeping the main tuber body mostly above the waterline.

Only the roots should dangle down into the deep, wet zone of the container.

This setup allows the roots to breathe while keeping the heavy bulb secure and upright.

Water Quality: The Dissolved Oxygen Factor

Do not just fill your vase from the kitchen tap and expect miracles.

Municipal water often contains chlorine and heavy minerals that can burn sensitive young roots.

Use collected rainwater, or let your tap water sit in an open bucket for twenty-four hours to let the chemicals dissipate.

You must change this water every single week without exception.

This is where the physical labor comes in, and your back might ache from carrying heavy glass vessels to the sink.

Stagnant water loses its dissolved oxygen quickly, which leads to root suffocation and that dreaded rotten-egg smell.

When you change the water, take a moment to rinse the slimy film off the roots and the inside of the glass.

Feeding Your Water-Grown Elephant Ears

Water has zero nutrients, and your growing elephant ears in water will eventually starve without help.

However, adding fertilizer to water is a delicate tightrope walk.

If you add too much, you will trigger a massive algae explosion that turns your elegant glass vase into a green swamp.

I use a highly diluted, water-soluble hydroponic fertilizer at about one-quarter of the recommended strength.

Only add this fertilizer every second water change, and watch the leaf tips closely.

If you notice the leaf margins turning brown and crispy, you are over-fertilizing the plant.

If the new leaves grow pale green or yellow, increase the fertilizer dosage slightly during the next change.

Lighting and Climate Requirements

In 2005, I struggled to acclimatize tropical bog plants to a dry, indoor climate, learning that humidity is just as important as root moisture.

While the roots are wet, the leaves still sweat moisture into the air constantly.

Colocasia needs bright, indirect sunlight to produce those massive, dramatic leaves.

A south- or west-facing window works best, but shield the plant from harsh, direct afternoon sun which can scorch the foliage.

If your indoor air is dry, use a humidifier to keep the ambient humidity above fifty percent.

Keep the plant away from cold drafts and air conditioning vents, as sudden temperature drops will shock the roots.

Managing Pests and Common Pitfalls

Let us be honest: indoor water gardens can attract some annoying pests.

The combination of standing water and warmth is an open invitation for mosquitoes to lay eggs.

To prevent this, you can drop a tiny piece of a mosquito dunk (containing BTI bacteria) into the water container.

Spider mites also love the dry upper leaves of Colocasia.

I keep a spray bottle handy to mist the leaves regularly, washing away any dusty webs before they colonize the plant.

If you notice the leaves yellowing rapidly, check the base of the tuber for mushiness.

If it feels soft like a rotten potato, your experiment has failed, and it is time to discard it and start over.

Don’t be discouraged if you lose a plant; even after thirty years in this trade, I still lose the occasional specimen to rot.

Seasonal Dormancy: What to Do in Winter

Colocasias are programmed to rest when the days get shorter and temperatures drop.

Even indoors, your water-grown plant might stop producing new leaves in November.

If the existing leaves begin to yellow and die back, do not panic.

This is the plant entering its natural winter dormancy phase.

When this happens, remove the tuber from the water and trim away the dead roots and foliage.

Wrap the dry tuber in newspaper and store it in a cool, dark closet until spring.

In April, you can pull it out, place it back in shallow water, and watch the cycle begin again.
