Build an 8 DIY Butterfly Puddler Station for a Messy, Real-World Wildlife Garden

My lower back is screaming at me today.

I spent four hours yesterday hauling heavy river rocks to patch up my woodland path, and my hands still smell of damp compost and clay soil.

But as I sat on my old, rusted garden bench, nursing a cup of lukewarm black coffee, I noticed a solitary Tiger Swallowtail trying to get a drink from a dry patch of dirt.

Slice up an overripe banana, some mushy peaches, or a rotting apple and lay them on the mud.

The fruit will ferment in the hot sun, releasing a yeasty aroma that butterflies find irresistible.

Keep this tray away from your back porch unless you want to share your space with wasps and flies.

It is a bit of a smelly mess, but it works better than almost any other design.

5. The Hanging Coconut Shell

If your garden space is limited to a small balcony or a concrete patio, you can still participate.

Buy a whole coconut, saw it in half, and scrape out the white meat.

Drill three small holes near the rim of one half and thread some sturdy jute twine through them.

Keep the concrete about an inch thick in the center, tapering slightly toward the edges.

Let it cure under a plastic sheet for two days before peeling away the green leaf.

The mud will dry out into a hard, cracked brick during a August heatwave if you forget to water it.

Mosquitoes will try to lay eggs in your puddler if you let the water get too deep.

To prevent mosquito breeding, always keep the water level below the surface of the sand or stones.

If green algae starts to grow over the rocks, scrape it off with an old wire brush; do not use chemical bleach.

Remember that failure and messiness are normal parts of working with real, biological systems.
